Our History

A Distinguished Track Record of Helping Children

"On any given day, as many as 3,800 children in 1st to 3rd grades in Oregon are suffering from dental pain or infection."

Oregon Smile Survey 2012 Report

The Creston Children's Dental Clinic is one of the few places in Portland where large numbers of low-income children can receive regular, high quality dental care in a clinic setting. Creston was founded in 1952 by the Assistance League of Portland, who operated the clinic until 2009 when they announced Creston's closure. To avoid losing this community resource, a group of dental health professionals established the Friends of Creston Children's Dental Clinic (FCCDC) to assume stewardship of Creston. With public and private contributions, and volunteer support, FCCDC was able to keep Creston from closing and put in motion a new sustainable operating model.

Today, our dental home model for Creston is based on volunteers, collaboration, education, and equitable access to care. Creston is a five-chair clinic located in Creston Elementary School in SE Portland; the only school-based dental clinic in our area. FCCDC provides education and treatment to over 1,000 low-income students in grades K-12. Patients receive comprehensive dental care including 6-9 month exams, sealants, fluoride varnish applications, x-rays (including panoramic), dental supply kits, and more. Our education program "Healthy Roots" engages children and parents in classes and dental trivia games, and provides them with free dental kits.

Changing Lives at Creston!

Dental Assistant, Alyssa, with a patient sporting his new smile.

This 14 year old, from a small island in Micronesia, had never been to a dentist. He had severe, rampant cavities, especially his upper anterior teeth. By nature, he was very shy, quiet, and he never smiled.

While Dr. Ferre restored his teeth over several appointments, Alyssa, our Creston dental assistant, brought him out of his shell and worked with him to improve his oral hygiene. We will never forget that first smile after we restored his upper anterior incisor teeth and gave him a mirror to see the changes we had made. Our collective eyes watered up.
