Fluoride, Nature's Cavity Fighter!

Fluoridation (fluoride ion in water) is a 20th Century adaptation of a naturally-occurring process. Sadly, Portland is the largest city in the United States without fluoridation. That makes the topical application of fluoride all that more important to help reduce the amount of cavities in Portland's children.

There are different methods of delivering fluoride to the mouth, including toothpaste, rinses, and varnish (applied at the dental office). For children from ages 6 months to 12 years old, when the permanent teeth are growing in the jaw, the American Dental Association recommends a fluoride supplement to strengthen the permanent teeth. A prescription for fluoride supplements can be obtained from your child's pediatrician. If you need a refill or new prescription, our Creston dentists will be happy to write one for your child.
